Since we began programming in the Cree School Board in January 2010, Youth Fusion’s activities have engaged a growing number of youth in exciting projects such as media, leadership, sports & outdoor activities, performing arts and visual arts.
Youth Fusion’s innovative approach is to place university students and graduates, working as project coordinators, in northern communities for 4-10 months at a time to work with youth on a daily basis. Our long-term commitment allows high school students to carry out projects that are meaningful to them and are a source of pride.
Beyond implementing daily extra-curricular activities that motivate students to attend school, Youth Fusion strives to strengthen links between the school and community by working with local organizations such as the radio station, youth centre and band council. Our programs contribute towards building school spirit and a sense of belonging at school, and changing perceptions about what young people can achieve!
Youth Fusion’s project coordinators also provide one-on-one tutoring and work with teachers to develop classroom activities with real-world applications that help make school learning more relevant for teenagers.
According to a 2008 Cree School Board report, less than 9% of CSB students graduate from high school within five years. Students are absent on average 43 days per school year. Youth Fusion is proud to join each school’s efforts to increase attendance, student engagement and academic success in this challenging context.
