PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY AND JAMES LYNG HIGH SCHOOL

A Concordia student in Environment started a ‘student green team’ that focused on recycling, composting and responsible consumption at James Lyng high school.

Seventy-five students participated in our environmental activities, a record high participation rate that was received very positively by the school.

EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIP

Our project coordinator encouraged the students of James Lyng to implement a vermicomposting project at their school. We organized a visit to Concordia University’s Greenhouse, which allowed students to pick their own worms while attending intensive vermicomposting workshops. While at Concordia, the students also had the opportunity to enjoy a meal at The People’s Potato, a student-run vegan cafeteria.

This field trip effectively allowed James Lyng students to spend, for the first time, several hours in a university and discover some aspects of university life. They returned to their school with composting bins.

OUR PRIORITIES

The “Green” Club was divided into several sections:
- Recycling: To ensure an effective recycling system at the school
- Composting: To improve the handling of organic waste at the school
- Responsible consumption: To analyze their cafeteria in order to assess the possibility of eliminating unhealthy food and promoting responsible consumption
- Improve the St-Henri borough by cleaning certain areas in partnership with Eco-Quartier Louis-Cyr.
